Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) responds to the election of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rt Revd Sarah Mullally

MONDAY, 6TH OCTOBER, 2025 The news of the appointment of Bishop Sarah Mullally on Friday, 3rd October, 2025 as the next Archbishop of Canterbury is a devastating one that ignores the current situation and challenges being faced by the Anglican Communion. It is a double jeopardy; first, in its insensitivity to the conviction of the majority of Anglicans who are unable to embrace female headship in the episcopate, and second, more disturbing that Bishop Sarah Mullally is a strong supporter of same-sex marriage as evidenced in her speech in 2023, after a vote to approve the blessings of homosexuals when she described the result as a “moment of hope for the Church. ” It remains to be seen how the same person hopes to mend the already torn fabric of the Anglican Communion by the contentious same-sex marriage, which has caused an enormous crisis across the entire Anglican Communion for over two decades. This election is a further confirmation that the global Anglican world could no lon...

GAFCON Reacts as Mullally is elected Head of the Anglican Church

The Global Anglican Future Conference (GAFCON), which represents millions of Anglicans, issued a statement expressing “sorrow” and suggesting the decision would deepen existing divisions within the Communion. The statement, delivered by GAFCON Primates Council Chairman the Most Reverend Dr. Laurent Mbanda, focused on the theological stance on marriage and sexuality of Mullally.  GAFCON highlighted that the Archbishop-designate has previously voted in favour of introducing the blessing of same-sex marriages in the Church of England and has been outspoken in her views on sexual ethics.  The body also believes these actions and views are contrary to scriptural authority and constitute a failure to uphold her consecration vows to “banish and drive away all strange and erroneous doctrine.” GAFCON also stated that the appointment of a woman to the role makes it impossible for the Archbishop of Canterbury to serve as a “focus of unity” for the entire Communion. “The majority of the A...

Moving into Spiritual Maturity

A BIBLE STUDY PRESENTED AT THE DIOCESAN MEN’S ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING HELD AT CHRIST ANGLICAN CHURCH, EFFURUN ON SATURDAY, 19TH AUGUST, 2023 THEME: Moving into Spiritual Maturity TEXTS: Acts 17:10-11; Hebrews 6: 1-2 INTRODUCTION This bible study is comparatively drawn in contrast to the background to the thriving performance of our wives, daughters and mothers, the Women’s Guild, Girls Guild and Mothers Union as the Christian Men’s Fellowship is the conglomeration of the relative arms of the aforementioned sections of the Women’s Organisations – the Christian Men’s Fellowship = Women’s Guild; Fathers Union = Mothers Union; sadly enough, we don’t have a functional comparison for the Girls’ Guild amongst the Men. This comparison is with the aim of motivating us to arise and take our rightful place and lead as ordained by the Lord. Going by the “giant stride” they are making we have no choice than compare ourselves to them as we still struggle to hold men prayer meetings at the paroch...
