THE DAILY FOUNTAIN DAILY DEVOTIONAL GUIDE OF THE CHURCH OF NIGERIA (ANGLICAN COMMUNION)
DATE: THURSDAY, 14TH SEPTEMBER, 2023 (HOLY CROSS DAY)
TOPIC: JESUS HUMBLED HIMSELF
TEXT: PHILIPPIANS 2:5-11
5. Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus,
6. who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God,
7. but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, [and] coming in the likeness of men.
8. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to [the point of] death, even the death of the cross.
9. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name,
10. that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth,
11. and [that] every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ [is] Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
MESSAGE:
In Jesus we see perfect humility exemplified with every due respect to God the Father. Though He was God, He did not count equality with God but emptied Himself, a thing to be grasped. Jesus Christ emptied Himself of equality with God, God form or God body, and the spirit body that He lived in from eternity, to take human form. He emptied Himself of immortality of body, also the glory He had with the Father before the world began, His authority in heaven and on earth (which was given back to Him after the resurrection), and His divine attributes and outward powers that He had with the Father from eternity.
When Jesus appeared in human form, He humbled Himself absolutely, learnt obedience through suffering - with every humility to the extent of being obedient unto death, even death on a cross. Through death on the cross, He destroyed he who has the power of death - Satan! He lay down His life and took it back to save us. God responded accordingly: Exalted Him highly and bestowed on Him the name above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to God's own glory. God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble. Humble yourself before God, He will uplift you in due season.
PRAYER:
God make us humble and faithful servants in Jesus' name. Amen.
