THE DAILY FOUNTAIN DAILY DEVOTIONAL GUIDE OF THE CHURCH OF NIGERIA (ANGLICAN COMMUNION)
DATE: THURSDAY, 11TH NOVEMBER, 2021
TOPIC: WISDOM OF THE POOR IS MORE THAN STRENGTH
TEXT: ECCLESIASTES 9:13-18
13. This wisdom I have also seen under the sun, and it [seemed] great to me:
14. [There was] a little city with few men in it; and a great king came against it, besieged it, and built great snares around it.
15. Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city. Yet no one remembered that same poor man.
16. Then I said: "Wisdom [is] better than strength. Nevertheless the poor man's wisdom [is] despised, And his words are not heard.
17. Words of the wise, [spoken] quietly, [should be] heard Rather than the shout of a ruler of fools.
18. Wisdom [is] better than weapons of war; But one sinner destroys much good."
MESSAGE:
Verses 1-12 of Ecclesiastes 9 discuss death and how best humans are to apply wisdom in their daily living. The Preacher in our text today examines the benefits of wisdom in the world as we live together on earth. When you read verses 13-15, do you realise that looking down on people around us may cause us great harm in the days of adversity. A little town was attacked by a great king. In the same town was a poor man who had the solution to save the town but due to his status, he was neglected at the expense of the entire town. God can use anybody among the Clergy, our churches, schools and offices to cause a turnaround for us in our situations if we can be humble to acknowledge them. Wisdom teaches us not to look down on anyone around us because God can use anyone beyond our understanding. May we not neglect our destiny helpers placed around us!
Verses 16-17 of our reading today give us a great warning on why we need to consider seriously the way we look down on the wise but poor men around us, especially in our Churches. We must reconsider our practice of neglecting poor but wise men and recognising rich fools. A wise ruler or king listens to men of wisdom than men who are full of themselves. Wisdom is better than strength (money or weapons).
PRAYER:
Lord Jesus, open my eyes with Your true wisdom to see, locate and use all destiny helpers around me especially in the days of great adversity
