THE DAILY FOUNTAIN DAILY DEVOTIONAL GUIDE OF THE CHURCH OF NIGERIA (ANGLICAN COMMUNION)
DATE: FRIDAY 20 APRIL, 2018
TOPIC: EVIDENCE THAT YOU KNOW GOD
TEXT: 1 JOHN 2:1-11
1. My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
2. And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.
3. Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments.
4. He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
5. But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him.
6. He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.
7. Brethren, I write no new commandment to you, but an old commandment which you have had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which you heard from the beginning.
8. Again, a new commandment I write to you, which thing is true in Him and in you, because the darkness is passing away, and the true light is already shining.
9. He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness until now.
10. He who loves his brother abides in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him.
11. But he who hates his brother is in darkness and walks in darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.
MESSAGE
There are things in life you need to be sure about because so much depends on the outcome. Your salvation is such an issue. The Bible warns that many are deceived about this crucial matter (Luke 13:27). Christianity is not just knowing about God but knowing God. John 17:3 says, “This is eternal life that they may know you, the only true God and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.” Christianity at its heart is, knowing God personally through Jesus Christ.
Our text identifies practical evidence that may help you be sure that you know God personally. Some of the evidence are that you: Fellowship with the brethren, keep God’s Commandments, walk as Jesus walked and love the brethren.
God’s Commandments are in the New Testament. Let us mention a few here. Christians are commanded to: abstain from idols (Acts 15:20); awake to righteousness (1 Cor. 15: 34); ask in order to receive (Mt 7:7), and many more. To walk as Jesus walked means doing everything with the aim of pleasing your heavenly Father. Jesus said “My food is to do the will of Him who sent me and to finish His work” (John 4: 34). Love of the brethren is also paramount. In all, God expects you to live an exemplary life that others may see Him through you.
Prayer: Pray that the Holy Spirit will daily illuminate your heart with the knowledge of God through His Word.
